It goes without saying that no two children are the same. Every child deserves personalized care that addresses their unique healthcare needs. The role of your child’s pediatrician is to address physical, behavioral, and mental health issues so that they can get the most out of life and grow into healthy adults. Your pediatrician will diagnose and treat any childhood illness whether it’s a minor illness or serious disease.
While no two children are alike, certain issues tend to develop within certain age groups. Your pediatrician requires rigorous academic and clinical training to ensure they can identify health problems at an early stage. If your child suffers from any of the following issues, it’s important to contact your pediatrician to provide them with a lasting solution and ongoing care.
As a full-service pediatric clinic, Federal Way Pediatrics provides children with best healthcare practices regardless of the health issue they’re facing. For more detailed information about any of the above-listed topics, simply follow this link.
Certain pediatric health issues are more common than others. What follows is a brief overview of the top 5 most common pediatric issues that families face today. Once your child is diagnosed with any of these conditions, we will develop a treatment program highly focused on their unique needs.
In some situations, Dr. Ahmad can follow up on an inpatient or outpatient basis. For other conditions, ongoing care and a treatment plan are required. We offer many pediatric services on-site including electrocardiograms and other treatments related to common heart conditions. If your child needs immediate emergency care, we will recognize and respond to the urgency that the situation demands.
Asthma – Pediatric asthma is the most common serious children’s disease. It affects countless infants and children but can be difficult to diagnose in kids under the age of five. It’s important to note that your Federal Way pediatrician cannot cure asthma, as there is no known cure for the disease. However, a treatment plan and medications can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent damage to your child’s lungs.
The most common symptom of pediatric asthma is coughing but coughing is common in children and doesn’t necessarily mean your child has the disease. Wheezing is another symptom, especially if it’s happening frequently. If your child is under five years of age, you should ensure they stay healthy until they’re old enough for your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Without a comprehensive asthma treatment protocol, the disease can be life-threatening.
Other symptoms your pediatrician may ask you to take note of include rapid breathing, complaints of chest pain, and reduced energy or weakness. Risk factors for pediatric asthma include:

Congenital Heart Disease – This is the most common of several different pediatric heart conditions. By definition, congenital heart disease describes a heart defect that children are born with and is the most common type of birth defect. In fact, 35,000 babies are born with congenital heart disease every year in the United States, which equates to about 1 out of every 125 births.
This disease may affect the heart’s walls, valves, arteries, and veins. Blood flow may be slowed down, rerouted, or even blocked. Symptoms include blue coloration of your child’s skin, shortness of breath or tiring during feeding or exercise, or a heart murmur.
There are a variety of treatments for congenital heart disease but not all children require treatment. Your pediatrician may treat your child’s disease with medications, surgery, transplant, procedures using catheterization, or some combination of the above. Treatment options are assessed after your Federal Way pediatrician diagnoses the type of defect and its severity. Your pediatrician will also consider your child’s age, overall health, and size.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – This chronic condition affects millions of children in the United States and commonly continues into adulthood. Common symptoms of pediatric ADHD include hyperactivity, difficulty maintaining attention and focus, and impulsive behavior. Children suffering from ADHD may perform poorly in school, struggle with low self-esteem, and have difficulty maintaining healthy personal relationships.
While some children eventually grow out of their ADHD symptoms, others must seek out help from a qualified pediatrician to develop treatment protocols that help them lead a normal life. The causes of ADHD are still being researched but genetics likely plays a key role along with other factors like brain injuries, diet, and environment.
To help your child succeed in life, it’s important for your pediatrician to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. To accomplish this goal, your Federal Way pediatrician may recommend treatments that include medication, education, psychotherapy, or some combination of the above.
Acne – Acne is common in children but presents a problem when they are seven years of age or younger. In younger children, acne may be caused by an adrenal or gonadal tumor, Cushing’s Syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, precocious adrenarche, or precocious puberty. Acne often accompanies the onset of puberty but is a cause for concern when it affects a young child.
Your pediatrician will seek to diagnose younger children suffering from acne before developing a treatment protocol. For older children, acne treatment may include cleansers and lotions, topical medicines, oral medications, chemical peels, and laser or light therapy.
Concussion – If you suspect your child suffered a concussion, it’s vital to seek out a diagnosis and treatment from a qualified Federal Way pediatrician. While most concussions temporarily disrupt normal brain function, the effects on some children can impact them for the rest of their life.
Concussions are most common in collision sports like football and hockey. While usually caused by impacts directly to the head, sometimes concussions occur from a hit to the body that causes a reflex force to the head. This is why it’s important to identify concussion symptoms when they first develop, which may be immediately following the impact up to a few days later.
Children may also suffer a concussion after falling, an automobile accident, or in any other situation where a head injury is possible. The most common symptoms of a concussion include:
You should never underestimate the serious implications of a concussion. You should immediately seek out a diagnosis from a pediatrician who can offer treatment suggestions. If your child is an athlete, they should not return to practice or participation until they are cleared by their pediatrician. Repeated concussions are a serious concern for children and adults alike but permanent damage can result from one single event.
Your pediatrician may suggest treatment that includes rest, hydration, pain medication, ice compresses, injection or topical pain mitigation. Hidden injuries to the brain are something else that must be addressed. Dr. Ahmad will take the time needed to ensure your child gets the personalized care they need after suffering a concussion.
